Roger Penland, who attended Monongah High before graduating from Rivesville High in 1972, passed away on Christmas Day, 2019.

He loved Barack and Michelle Obama, Larry, Curley and Moe (yuk, yuk!), Clark Gable, Groucho Marx, John Lennon and life and had a wicked devil-may-care sense of humor about everything.

He moved from Newport News, Virginia before returning to Marion County and living in Fairmont, where his son, Roger Penland, Jr., lives.

He was a disabled veteran.

Roger’s obituary:

Roger Franklin Penland, 65, of Grafton, formally of Katy, passed away on Wednesday, December 25, 2019 at United Hospital Center.

He was born on August 30, 1954 in Newport News, Virginia, a son of the late Marion Ward Penland and Lelia (Summers) Penland.


Roger was a U. S. Navy Veteran and proudly served from 1972 - 1974 during the Vietnam Era. He was a disabled Veteran and stay at home to take care of his four sons.


Roger is survived by his four sons, Jonathan E. Penland and wife, Amber of Grafton, Andrew T. Penland, Columbus, Ohio, Roger F. Penland, Jr. of Fairmont and Mark J. Penland of Fairmont; five grandchildren, Ethan M. Penland, Nathan I. Penland, Holden C. Penland, Liam Penland, and Willow Penland; brother, Robert H. Watkins and wife, Barbara of Youngstown, Ohio.


In addition to his parents, Roger was preceded in death by his wife of 33 years, Judy Kay (Harris) Penland; his daughter, Jennifer Ann Penland.


Memorial contribution may be made to the funeral home to help with funeral expenses.
In keeping with his wishes, Roger will be cremated. A graveside service will take place West Virginia National Cemetery at a later date.
