When Jackie Olesky Straight, Class of 1955, was born into a coal mining family on September 8, 1937, America still was struggling to escape the clutches of the Great Depression.

But no matter how little we had, her mother, Lena Futten Olesky, born within sight of the Alps in the Austrian town of Pellizzano (which became part of Italy after World War I), never turned down anyone who showed up at our door on Church Street, begging for food.

That spirit of helping others is imbued in Jackie, who received the Salt and Light Award from Catholic Charities for her work with St. Peter Church’s Outreach program. She regularly puts together food and clothing for those less fortunate for Christmas and Easter – any excuse to help others will do.

I also helped others – integrating a baseball program for children of color in southern West Virginia before the courts began ordering it, and including girls into baseball with boys and, in my 43 years as a newspaper editor, getting better treatment and justice for the powerless. But Jackie out-did me by a Good Samaritan mile.

Like her Grandma Olesky, Jackie is at home in her garden and mowing her three acres in Rivesville. Jackie also travels, to Europe and Alaska, for example.

When we were young, and I was the annoying big brother, I took a photo of Jackie sticking her tongue out in anger at me that I still have in a boxful of family pictures. That didn’t last long.

Over the decades, we have shared seats next to each other in Mountaineer Field, thanks to her daughter, Renee, a pharmacist at WVU’s Ruby Memorial Hospital, who handles the season tickets, parking passes and Mountaineer Athletic Club donations. All I do is mail Renee a check each year to cover the costs.

We have wept with each other when our spouses passed away. Dave Straight for Jackie and Monnie Elizabeth Turkette Olesky for me. And when Jackie’s child, Kurt David, left this world in infancy.

We have shared the joys of parenthood and grandparenthood. Jackie’s children are Renee, Belinda and LeaAnn. They provided grandchildren Ashley, Shaun, Aaron, Adam.

Other Monongah High Alumni have similar sibling experiences. Mary Louise Baker Orsini, Class of 1948, who married Tom Orsini, Class of 1946, for example. She married into the six Orsini brothers’ family that shared heartache and euphoria over the decades. Her birthday is September 7.

And Nathaleeen Cameon Oliverio, Class of 1948, whose birthday is September 26. She shares joy and sorrow for Cameons in America and Italy.

I just thought the September Lions birthday article was a good time to offer kudos to the better sibling in the Olesky family.
