Laurann Vance Allen, Class of 1971, retired last month from WVU Children’s Hospital in Morgantown.
Laurann writes:
“Garry and I have raised 3
children and adopted 2 of our grandchildren. Harlea is 18 and Cole is 12.
Harlea just graduated and will be attending WV Junior College in August. Let me
know how everyone else is doing from the class of 1971!”
Laurann
is married and lives in Enterprise with husband Garry. Her sister, Nicole Knox
Vance, lives in Fairmont.
Stanley Vance is Class of 1964. Sue Vance Latham is Class
of 1975. Howard Vance, who lives in Worthington, is a 1985 North Marion High
grad.
Laurann is among the three million Americans, including
me (both eyes 5 years apart), who have cataract surgery each year at a $3.4
BILLION cost to Medicare.
As
for the 1971 class, they are an active bunch. In contrast, NO ONE showed up at the 2015 Monongah High Alumni Reunion from the Class of 1975, which was a 40th anniversary honor class.
Led by Jay Holman, the
Class of 1971 is the most faithful at attending Monongah High Alumni Reunions. Susan
Ahouse Schrader, who stirs up the dust at her Stoney Lonesome and Piscataway,
New Jersey homes, and Doris Carpenter Rogers, who lives in Charleston with
husband Scott Rogers, keep the Class of 1971 a lively group.
Sue’s son, Chris Schrader, lives in Philadelphia.
Mama shows up on his doorstep regularly, because it’s on the way to her action
in New York City, often with sister Mary “Kitty” Ahouse Morrison, who lives on
Lyndon Avenue in Monongah.
Doris is a daughter of
Iris Martin Carpenter, Class of 1950. Doris and Sue have been friends since second grade. Mary
“Kitty” Ahouse Morrison and Sue’s brother is Mike Ahouse, a North Marion
graduate and Monongah mailman.
Ed Graffius, Class of
1971, who lives in Fairmont, likes to hear varoom noises from race cars, like
at the Indianapolis 500. At other times he’s zooming around wife Brenda
Ridenour Graffius, Class of 1974, a Licensed Practical Nurse. They live in
Pleasant Valley.
Parma Kay Fetty, Class of
1971, never met a fish she didn’t like to hook or a boat she didn’t live to
zoom on the river in.
Rick Yanero, Class of
1971, of Dover, Delaware, once owner of
Rick's Bellview Lounge in Fairmont and is married to Harriet Yanero. Rick’s
siblings are Gary Yanero, Dorothy “Dot” Yanero Evans, who lives in Monongah,
and Paul Yanero.
If you want to check up
on YOUR class, just go to the top left corner of this blog and type in
Class of 1971
(substitute for 1971 the
year of your graduation).
That’s how I got most of
this article's information on the Class of 1971.
Once I post an article, it’s available forever.
You can do the same thing by typing in the name of a Monongah High graduate you are trying to re-connect with. If I’ve written about that former Lion, the articles will show up in a row. Try it!
On another blog I run, for Akron Beacon Journal retirees, I ran an article about two Air Force veterans who served together in Vietnam and found each other on Facebook and had a reunion for the first time in 50 years!
Social media, used properly, can be a good thing. Like letting Monongah High alumni keep track of each other.
