MONONGAH — Monongah Mayor Greg Vandetta joked he was scared to open additional mail received by the town.
During the Monongah Town Council meeting on Monday, Vandetta said the town had received so much good news that he was afraid to open other mail.
Vandetta received an email from a Family Dollar representative regarding the store opening in the town. In the email, the representative informed Vandetta that all acquisitions needed for the project to move foward have been finalized.
Little new information had come out about the store opening.
“Now I know that we are getting pretty close,” Vandetta said.
Vandetta said one rumor he had heard was for the store to be open around February 2016.
Vandetta said the town had received a grant from the George Bowers Charitable Trust. Vandetta applied for a grant and included the prices to replace the heating and cooling system in the town hall.
“I don’t know whether we received funding for both parts,” Vandetta said. “I kind of put it together as one, but put the heat as one and the air as one.”
Vandetta said he will find out how much the town received from the trust on Aug. 6 during a presentation.
According to Vandetta, Monongah had previously received a $10,000 grant to make town bathrooms Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)-compliant.
In other business:
• The town passed a resolution to change the scope for a grant. The funds will be used to pay for the floor installed at a town storage building that was recently constructed.
• The town will pay approximately $2,500 for a customer to be connected to the water system. The new customer was required to pay about $5,000 by the Public Service Commission.
• The town council approved a $1,300-per-year service agreement for the water plant.
• The council discussed parking being an issue on one street in town. Monongah Police Chief Rick Barnhart will be speaking to residents about the issue.
• A meeting to reorganize the neighborhood watch in Monongah will be held at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 18, at the Monongah Town Hall. All citizens are welcome.
Cheif Barnhart is looking into grants that may go toward funding an electronic sign for the town.
• The next Monongah Town Council meeting will be at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 10, at the town hall.
