Daily Mail, Gazette merge

The Charleston Daily Mail and the Charleston Gazette, once fierce competitors for readers, will merge into one newspaper, the Charleston Gazette-Mail.

The two papers previously put out a combined paper on Sundays. 

Newspapers all over the country are dropping print editions, going out of business or slashing staff dramatically as the Internet continues to intrude on their once-profitable and energetic enterprises.

I was in the Daily Mail sports department in the 1950s under sports editor Dick Hudson, who lived to be 100 years old in the Carolinas.
