Fire strikes Rogers storage garage in Monongah

A commercial garage used for storage owned by Kevin and Amy Rogers caught fire on Ford Street in Monongah, just off Bridge Street.

Three firetrucks impacted traffic on Bridge Street for hours.

Mandi Rogers Craig filled me in with the details. Mandi’s parents are Scott and Doris Carpenter Rogers. Mandi lives in her mom’s childhood home in Monongah, right across from the Rogers garage and one house over. Mandi’s husband, Justin Craig, passed away in April at the age of 34.

There was another structure fire on Ford Street in 2020 that sent one person to the hospital. But I never saw the name of the hospitalized person.

Mandi’s grandmother is Iris Carpenter, who was in my Class of 1950. Iris was married to Bill Carpenter. She passed away more than 30 years ago.

William J. Carpenter, who passed in 2014, was predeceased by his wife Iris Delores Martin Carpenter; two brothers, Lonnie Carpenter, James Carpenter and his wife Nancy Carpenter; one sister, Nancy Carpenter Tharp and her husband, Buck Tharp.

The Class of 1975 Bill Carpenter is survived by three children, Doris Carpenter Rogers, Class of 1971, and husband Scott of Winfield, Will Carpenter of Monongah and Amy Carpenter of Pleasant Valley.

Mandi is Store Sales Leader at Fashion Bug and Retail Store Manager at Dollar General.

Unfortunately, too many of my Class of 1950 friends have passed away. Besides Iris, those no longer with us include Hellen Snider Carpenter, widow of Fairmont East graduate Paige Carpenter; Tom Orsini; Ann Manuel Richardson; Virginia Manuel Eddy, Ann’s sister; Mary Bienkoski Domico; Nancy Robinson Saunders, my Monongah High Prom date; Theresa Demus; Barbara Baczuk Franklin; Bill Pringle; Lawrence “Sonny” Godby, Jr.; Jim Wimer; Bill Birdsell; Walter Brzuzy; Deloris Butcher; Joe Manzo; Paul Rankin; Jim “Judge” Starcher; Pat Kiehl Williams; Barbara Glover Rombola; Kathleen Blagg Goldstein; Martha Jean Carpenter; Jim Commodore; Anthony DeMary, Jr.; Geraldine Fullen Ross; Richard Garrett; Agnes Jean Larry DiLaura; HHHHarold Spragg; Lucille Herron Anderson; and Lyman Wadsworth.
