Bud Satterfield passes away

Bud Satterfield, Class of 1947, passed away Tuesday, April 10.

His brother, Steven “Bucky” Satterfield, Class of 1949, is a retired West Virginia State Patrol Officer living in St. Albans (Bud’s obituary says Charleston) who was part of our faceitiously named Gang That Terrorize Mario County during our Monongah High days.

Another brother, Donald Neil Satterfield, Class of 1952, passed away in 2015.

Bud was predeceased by sisters Mary Virginia “Ginny” Satterfield Lipinski, Class of 1942, a Monongah High cheerleader who married Eugene “Luge” Lipinski; and Eleanor Louise Satterfield Kennedy, Class of 1946.

Another sister, Violet Irene Satterfield Thompson, Class of 1942, lives in Worthington.

Bud’s birth name was Orval Vernon Satterfield, Jr., named for his father. His mother was Bessie Mae Davidson Satterfield.

Others in the “gang” with Bucky and me were Frank “Bruno” Franze, who lives in Slidell, Louisiana; Donald “Jake” Halpenny of Fairmont; the late Lawrence “Sonny” Godby;  Anthony “Tony” Eates, who lives in Fairmont with wife Lucy; Robert “Satch” Kasper, who has homes in South Lyon and Grand Lake (Presque Isle), Michigan; the late Joe Manzo; and the late Tom “Judge” Starcher.

Bud’s obituary:

Orval V. "Bud" Satterfield Jr., 89, of Monongah, passed away on Tuesday (April 10, 2018). He was born June 22, 1928 in Monongah, son of the late Orval Vernon and Bessie Mae Davidson Satterfield.


Bud attended Thoburn Grade School and
graduated from Monongah High School in 1947. He worked at the Monongah Mine #63 until he was drafted into the Army in 1950. He received his training at Fort Knox, Kentucky before being sent to Korea. He was honorably discharged in 1952 and received four bronze stars.

Bud then graduated from Coyne Electrical School in Chicago and retired from Loveridge Mine after 30 years. Bud was a member of the United Methodist Church. He enjoyed gardening, walking on the trail, bowling, and was an avid WVU sports fan.

Bud is survived by his wife, Betty Ann Satterfield, who he married on June 20, 1953; his son, Jerry Satterfield; six grandchildren, Lindsey, Brittany, Trey, Gannon, Peyton, and Justin Satterfield; two siblings, Steven "Bucky" Satterfield and his wife Rose of Charleston, and Violet Irene Thompson of Worthington; and several nieces and nephews.


In addition to his parents, Bud is preceded in death by his son, Jeffrey Vernon Satterfield;
his brother, Donald Neil Satterfield; and sisters, Mary Virginia Lipinski and Eleanor Louise Kennedy.


The family will receive friends from 4-8 p.m. Friday, April 13, 2018 at Domico Funeral Home, 414 Gaston Avenue in Fairmont. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 14, 2018 with Pastor Bill Preston officiating. Interment will follow at Shinnston Memorial Cemetery.
