Obituary for Suzi Barr Loss

I did not know that Suzanne Barr Loss’ first name was Claire until I read her obituary on the Domico Funeral Home web site.

I’m forced to troll the Marion County funeral homes daily because the Fairmont Times refuses to make their obituaries free without a subscription even though the obits are NOT the Times’ intellectual property, but are paid classifieds owned by the family of the deceased.

Suzi’s (I just can’t write Claire’s because no one would know who I mean) obituary :

Claire Suzanne Loss, 85, of Millfall passed away on January 30, 2016 at Pierpont/ Genesis Center in Fairmont.  She was born September 14, 1930 in Worthington, daughter of the late Dr. James and Mrs. Eva Barr.

She graduated from Monongah High School in 1948.  She was also a graduate of Fairmont Business College.  Suzanne worked for the DHHR, Cohen Law Firm, and Fairmont State College.  She had a green thumb and raised beautiful flowers in her younger years.  She loved animals, especially dogs.   She loved music; her favorite was Ray Charles. 

Claire is survived by two sons, Michael Loss and companion Susie Jett of Harter Hill and David Loss and wife Mary of Mill Fall; two g Claire Suzanne Loss, 85, of Millfall passed away on January 30, 2016 at Pierpont/ Genesis Center in Fairmont.  She was born September 14, 1930 in Worthington, daughter of the late Dr. James and Mrs. Eva Barr.

Claire is survived by two sons, Michael Loss and companion Susie Jett of Harter Hill and David Loss and wife Mary of Mill Fall; two granddaughters, Andie Moxley and husband Daniel of Fairmont and Veronica Loss and husband Corey White of Charleston; one great granddaughter, Vivian Moxley; a former daughter-in-law, Donna Loss of Fairmont; a sister, Jeannette Baczuk of Ashland, Ohio; and two sisters-in-law, Rose Hartman of Phoenix, AZ and Kathryn (Bernie) Loss of Monongah.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Arnold “JB” Loss; her oldest son, Elliot Barr Loss; two brothers, Jim and Harrelson Barr; and her sister, Hazel Vrabel.

In honoring her wishes there will be no memorial service.  There will be a Mass in her honor at the Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Monongah.  The date will be announced at a later date.  Domico Funeral Home, Fairmont, is in charge of arrangements.  Condolences may be sent to the family at www.domicofh.com

Suzanne Barr Loss passes away

Michael Loss of Worthington posted this sad news:

“My Mom passed away today. Jan 30, 2016. Rest in peace Mom. Born Sept 14, 1930.”

Suzanne Barr Loss, Class of 1948, was the widow of Arnold “J.B.” Loss, Class of 1947. Arnold passed away January 7, 2014.

Suzi and Arnold's son, David Loss, lives on the Loss property with wife Mary. Mike Loss lives on Harter Hill with Susie Jett. A third son, Elliott Barr Loss, is deceased.

 Suzi’s sister, Jeannette Barr Baczuk, Class of 1940, lives in Ashland, Ohio.

 

Arnold’s sister, Rosemary Loss Hartman, lives in Phoenix, Arizona.

Also predeceasing Arnold were sisters Mildred “Jean” Loss Carlot, who with husband Julie ran Carlot’s Grill across the street from Monongah High for decades, and Lucille Loss Blocker, wife of Richard Blocker of McCue Avenue; and brothers Bernard Loss (his widow, Kathryn, lives in Monongah) and Don Loss.

Their parents were John “JB” and Josephine (Deiling) Loss.

 

Lucille and Richard’s children are Barbara Blocker Tennant of Fairmont, Alan Tennant and wife Rebecca of Elkins, Scott Blocker and wife Karen of Clarksburg and Vicki Blocker Nottingham and husband Tom of Worthington.

 

Suzi was a daughter of the famous Dr. Barr of Worthington, who delivered most of Worthington’s children who collectively called themselves the Barr Babies.

Mary Louise Baker Orsini, who began at Monongah High with the Class of 1948, who lives on Swisher Hill with husband Tony Orsini, Class of 1946, of the famous six MHS Orsini brothers, wrote:

 “I remembered when Sue, some other girls used her bathroom, upstairs, to smoke, then we opened the window to let out the smoke and it looked as though the house was on fire.

“I remember when Dr. Barr would take us to the movies and he would sleep. That was the best rest he ever got and, of course, he had to see a patient on the way to the movies.

“I remember Mrs. Barr would take off down the walk with the broom after Sue and I when we misbehaved. They were the good old days.”

Lucille Loss Blocker passes away

Lucille Loss Blocker, wife of Richard Blocker of McCue Avenue, passed away Sunday, Dec. 14.

She was a daughter of John “J.B.” Loss and Josephine Dieling Loss. Lucille’s brother, Arnold “J.B.” Loss, Class of 1947, passed away in January.

Arnold’s widow, Suzanne Barr Loss, Class of 1948, lives in Mill Fall. Their son, David Loss, lives on the Loss property once owned by Frank Loss, brother of Arnold’s father, J.B. Loss. Their son, Mike, who attended school in Fairmont, lives on Harter Hill.

Lucille’s sons: Alan Tenant, Class of 1966, lives in Elkins, and Scott Blocker, Class of 1968, lives in Clarksburg. Her daughter, Victoria Blocker Nottingham, Class of 1969, lives in Worthington.

Her surviving sister is Rosemary Loss Hartman of Phoenix, Arizona.

Predeceasing Lucille was her sister, Mildred “Jean” Loss Carlot, who with husband Julie ran Carlot’s Grill across the street from Monongah High for decades; brothers Bernard (his widow, Kathryn, lives in Monongah) and brother Don; and Arnold & Suzanne’s son, Elliott Barr Loss.

“Lucille Blocker died yesterday on Dec 14th. She was 90 years old. Richard is 88. The faces on McCue Avenue have changed since the early to mid 1960s. Those who still live there include Greg Patrick, Etta Ewing and Richard Blocker. Joy Ross moved there in the 1970's. And Rob Martin lives in the house of his father.”

With Greg Patrick in the neighborhood there probably is a lot of Jenna Won’t Sing music emanating from McCue Avenue.

Monongah’s Roseann Orwig,  a Fairmont State nursing graduate who is a secretary at Fairmont General Hospital’s clinical laboratory, wrote:

“Missing a really special aunt today. My mom, Kathern Loss, is also her sister-in-law, and will miss her dearly. Didn't visit as often as we should, but always had her in our thoughts ... Hugs to Uncle Richard and Family.

Lucille Ann Blocker (November 27, 1924 - December 14, 2014) Lucille Ann Blocker, 90, of Monongah, WV passed away December 14, 2014 at Fairmont Regional Medical Center. She was born November 27, 1924 in Monongah, daughter of the late John “J.B.” and Josephine (Dieling) Loss. Lucille was a member of Monongah Baptist Church. She enjoyed gardening, flowers and bird watching. She is survived by her husband, Richard Blocker; four children, Barbara Tennant of Fairmont, Alan Tennant and wife Rebecca of Elkins, Scott Blocker and wife Karen of Clarksburg, Vicki (Blocker) Nottingham and husband Tom of Worthington; one sister, Rosemary Hartman of Arizona; a sister-in-law, Sue Loss of Mill Fall; nine grandchildren, Robert Joy and wife Mary Beth Taylor, Michael Joy and wife Alisa, Jennifer Tennant, Michael Tennant, Rebekah Shoobridge and husband Jason, Jeff Blocker and wife Monica, Eric Blocker, Chad Nottingham and wife Miranda, and Aaron Edwards; eight great grandchildren, Anthony Joy and wife Kisha, Steven Joy, Marissa Joy, Michael Joy and wife Kelsey, Colin Shoobridge, Logan Shoobridge, Hunter, Ryndon, and one great grandchild on the way; three great-great grandchildren Anna Rose Joy, Nathanial Joy, and Kyia Joy; several nieces, nephews, close friends and neighbors. Patty Baczuk’s brother Jim passes away

When I saw Baczuk in the obituary among the names of survivors, I got curious, as retired newspaper editors often do.

It turns out there is a connection to James David Jones, who passed away Thursday in Fairmont.

He’s the brother of Patricia Ann Jones Baczuk, who is married to Steven Andrew Baczuk. Steven’s father was Andy Baczuk, whose brother is the late Frank Baczuk, who was married to Jeanette Barr Baczuk, Class of 1940, who lives in Ashland, Ohio. Andy is married to Rose Sweetnich Baczuk.

 

Frank Baczuk's niece is Barbara Baczuk Franklin, Class of 1950, who is deceased. Barbara and I had the same uncle, Steve Kerekes, her through Carolina families and me through my dad's sister, Helen Olesky Kerekes, who was married to Steve.

Jeannette is sister of Suzanne Barr Loss, Class of 1948, who is the widow of Arnold “J.B.” Loss, Class of 1947. Their brother is Harrelson Barr, Class of 1939, whose daughter, Marcie Barr Marsh, is Class of 1966.

 

Jeannette, Suzi and Harrelson are the children of Dr. James Monroe Barr, who delivered nearly the entire population of Worthington. Those babies are known collectively as the Barr Babies.

James David Jones’ obituary:

James David Jones, 57, of Fairmont, passed away on Thursday, December 17, 2015

at the Fairmont Health & Rehabilitation Center (formerly the Arbors). James was

born in Fairmont on December 30, 1957, son of the late Robert William Jones and

Dorothy Geraldine Price Jones.

Mr. Jones is survived by his three sisters, Patricia Ann Baczuk and her husband

Steven Andrew of Fairmont, Pamela Sue Barnard of Orlando, FL, and Deborah Lou

Bates and her husband Stephen of Fairfax, VA; as well as four nephews, Steven

Baczuk Jr. and his girlfriend Laura Adams, Grant Barnard, William Bates, and Daniel Bates.

James was a 1976 graduate of Fairmont Senior High School as well as a graduate of the West Virginia State College, earning a degree in Business. Mr. Jones was a member of Central United Methodist Church in Fairmont.
