TINA KERN ELY PASSES AWAY

 Edgar Burley’s mother-in-law Tina Ely passes away

Justina Tina Kern Ely, mother-in-law of Edgar Burley, Class of 1962, passed away Saturday, January 2.

Her husband, Charles Ely, predeceased her.

Edgar, widower of Katherine Ely Burley, Tina's daughter, hung out in Worthington with his Monongah High buddies Jim Nottingham, Class of 1961; Jim McDaniel, Class of 1960, who today lives in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware; Roy “Jaybird” Murphy, Class of 1966; Joe McCullough, Class of 1962; David  Willis, Class of 1961; Clifford Morgan, Class of 1961; Harold Maze, Class of 1961; Wilbur Smith, Class of 1960; and Howard Shuttlesworth Jr., Class of 1972.

Jaybird married Patricia Beccaloni Murphy, Class of 1964, daughter of Margaret Browning Beccaloni and Mario Beccaloni, sister of Robert Beccaloni and stepdaughter of Steve Sinkovich.

Edgar once ran for mayor of Worthington.

Tina’s obituary:

Justina ”Tina” Irene Ely, 97, of Barrackville, passed away on January 2, 2021 at the Morgantown Health and Rehabilitation Center. She was born on January 26, 1923 in Morgantown, WV a daughter of the late Jonah and Sadie Walker Kerns.

 

In 1971, she was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Ely. Mrs. Ely was a member of the Barrackville United Methodist Church and was a graduate of Morgantown High School.

 

She was a homemaker in her own home, but had previously worked at Westinghouse and later after raising her children, the Fairmont Clinic for over twenty years. Justina was a member of the Methodist quilters, and the Lions’ Club Fire Plug. She loved quilting, sewing, and crocheting.

 

Survivors include her daughter, Monica Stevens of Fairmont, her son-in-law, Edgar Burley of Worthington, her grandchildren, Amey and Paul Anderson, Alicia and Nathanael Hibbs, Andrew and Jennifer Burley, and Tyler Stevens, her great-grandchildren Chad Anderson, Chelsea Ashcraft, Natalie Hibbs, and Draven Burley, her two great great-grandchildren, Braelyn Ashcraft and Brixton Anderson, as well as several nieces and nephews, and her life-long best friend, Jean Bane of Barrackville.

 

In addition to her parents and husband, Justina was preceded in death by her daughter, Katherine Burley, her son-in-law, Herbert Stevens, as well as her siblings, James Kerns, Carl Kerns, Ross Kerns, and Josephine Rowan.

 

Memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association, PO Box 417005, Boston, MA 02241, or to the Alzheimers’s Association, West Virginia Chapter, 1299 Pineview Drive, Suite 3, Morgantown, WV 26505. The family has entrusted arrangements to the Ford Funeral Home, Ford Chapel, 201 Columbia Street, Fairmont, WV 26554. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic all services will be held privately with Reverend Stephanie Bennett officiating. Interment will be held privately at the Grandview Memorial Gardens in Fairmont.
