North Carolina 5th state to follow West Virginia teachers’ lead

The teachers revolt started by West Virginia’s teachers has spread to North Carolina.
Nearly 20,000 teachers and their supporters rallied at the state capital in Raleigh demanding better funding for North Carolina’s public schools.

In March Arizona’s teachers, who had millions taken away by its state legislators after the 2008 financial meltdown, adopted the same “55 Strong” West Virginia strategy of every teacher in the state walking out at the same time.

Arizona teachers called their movement Arizona Educators United.

Oklahoma, Kentucky, Colorado and New Jersey teachers pointed to West Virginia’s teachers as their role model for improving their schools’ funding.

West Virginia teachers got a 5% pay raise by unanimous vote of the state Senate and House after a public outrage supported the teachers.

The Mountain State’s teachers were named Time Magazine’s 100 more influential people and organizations for the year.
