North Carolina 5th state
to follow West Virginia teachers’ lead
The teachers revolt started by West
Virginia’s teachers has spread to North Carolina.
Nearly 20,000 teachers and their
supporters rallied at the state capital in Raleigh demanding better funding for
North Carolina’s public schools.
In March
Arizona’s teachers, who had millions taken away
by its state legislators after the 2008 financial meltdown, adopted the same
“55 Strong” West Virginia strategy of every teacher in the state walking out at
the same time.
Arizona teachers called their movement Arizona Educators United.
Oklahoma, Kentucky, Colorado and New Jersey teachers
pointed to West Virginia’s teachers as their role model for improving their
schools’ funding.
West Virginia teachers got a 5% pay raise by unanimous
vote of the state Senate and House after a public outrage supported the
teachers.
The Mountain State’s teachers were named Time Magazine’s 100 more influential people
and organizations for the year.
