Evelyn Kasper Boggess, Class of 1953,
and Okey Boggess, a retired coal miner, are celebrating their 60th
wedding anniversary today (Thursday, September 1). They live in what we called
the Frogtown section, south of Monongah off U.S. 19 before you reach Swisher
Hill. You drive near St. Barbara’s Nursing Home to get to Evelyn’s childhood
home where she still lives.
Their children are Kathy Boggess
Peaslee, Class of 1975, who made the Facebook post about the anniversary, and
John Boggess, who owns the building that once housed the P.P. Shenasky Grocery
on U.S. 19 adjacent to where Thoburn School once stood.
Kathy is a Fairmont State grad living
in Youngstown.
Evelyn’s brother is Bob Kasper, Class
of 1950, who has homes in South Lyon and Presque Isle (Grand Lake), Michigan,
and my best friend since we were in first grade together at Sts. Peter and Paul
School 78 years ago. Helen was their late sister, who was adopted by Mr. and
Mrs. Lawrence Kasper before Bob and Evelyn were born years later.
John’s Shenasky building, which he
uses for storage, was constructed in 1891 by Pete and Nell Shenasky. Their daughter,
Amelia Shenasky Zentz, lives on Shenasky Lane. She is 96 and has a fantastic
memory for things that happened decades ago.
