Barbara Tennant passes away

Related to Blockers & Joys

Barbara Ann Tennant, daughter of Lucille Loss Blocker and mother of Robert and Michael Joy and Jennifer Tennant, passed away Saturday, December 26.

Barbara Ann Tennant
Barbara’s siblings are Alan Tennant, Class of 1966; Scott Blocker, Class of 1968; and Victoria Blocker Nottingham, Class of 1969. Lucille’s sister, Rosemary Loss Hartman, lives in Phoenix, Arizona.

Lucille Loss Blocker’s widower is Richard Blocker. Lucille’s parents were John “J.B.” Loss and Josephine Dieling Loss. Lucille’s brother, Arnold “J.B.” Loss, Class of 1947, also is deceased.

I think these Joys are from another branch of the family: Bob Joy, Class of 1956, was a guard on the 1955 Monongah High football team that won the state championship and married into the Tennant family; Joe Joy, Class of 1957; John Joy, Class of 1960, deceased; and Bill Joy, Class of 1964, deceased.

If you know how these Joys are related to each other, email John Olesky at jo4wvu@neo.rr.com and I’ll add the information to this article.

Family of the Year, indeed!

Well, I had to wait 4 days till the Fairmont Times lifted its ban on me copying and pasting the article for free (everyone gets a 5-article free view every 30 days), but I got a bonus the Times’ story about the Westfall family being the Times West Virginian Family of the year and the follow story 3 days later detailing the Westfalls' holiday and family life.

The Westfalls came by their family traits honestly.

Among the finest Monongah High graduates in history (I include him even though he didn’t technically graduate) are the late Frank Michalski, my protector on the Sts. Peter and Paul School playground if anyone made fun of my speech because I was born with a cleft palate, and his still very alive Ramona Fullen Michalski, Class of 1949, my Monongah High Alumni Monongah “bureau chief.” If I have any questions about former Lions, I phone Monie, as close friends call her, and she’s there with the answers.

And when former Lions are in Monongah from their homes far from the West Virginia mountains, they visit Ramona and her swimming pool. It’s normal for Ramona to have 20 to 50 people enjoying conversation at her place on Bridge Street Extension which is a few hundred feet outside the Monongah town limits.

Ramona’s house is a living museum of Monongah High and Monongah history, right down to the Monongah Lion spitting out water for the thirsty.

Here’s the Fairmont Times story about Ramona’s daughter, Marcia Michalski Westfall, Class of 1974, of Kilarm, married to Dave Westfall, Class of 1948. Marcia and Dave whisk their way to Florida and California on their Harley motorcycle. These two know how to enjoy life.

I embrace the articles but would add the the Michalski family falls into this same category. The fruit didn’t fall far from the family tree.

FAIRMONT — As the busy holiday season began, Judy McCoy decided this was going to be the year she didn’t let the perfect opportunity slip through her fingers.

It wasn’t the opportunity to bake a dozen of her best cookies or buy the perfect Christmas gift.

Instead, it was the opportunity to nominate Dave and Marcia Westfall’s family as the Times West Virginian Family of the Year.

“It’s funny,” McCoy said as she told the story. “I hadn’t bought a paper in a few days, and then I got one and read John Veasey’s column asking for nominations for Family of the Year. Every year I always say that Marcia and her family would be the perfect choice. This year I made sure to put it at the top of my holiday to-do list.”

Her efforts paid off, as the Times West Virginian has named the Westfalls this year’s Family of the Year.

Marcia is a kindergarten teacher at Monongah Elementary School, while Dave works for the Division of Highways, Marcia having served for more than 25 years and Dave working on his 23rd.

It was in the classroom where Marcia and McCoy first met.

“Marcia was in school ahead of me, but I had the opportunity to teach with her for several years when she was at Blackshere,” McCoy said. “She’s awesome. She was teaching third grade at the time, then she came down to kindergarten and we taught together. She was a good fit to our school and our school family. It was wonderful working with her.”

During those years as co-workers, McCoy and Marcia became close and often shared memories outside the classroom, whether it be at a family get-together or a weekend bonfire.

McCoy said that no matter the occasion, the Westfall family is always together having fun in some capacity.

“They’re an awesome family. They do a lot together, and they’re very supportive of each other,” McCoy said of the Westfalls, who have three children and eight grandchildren. “If one grandchild has a game, the whole family goes to that ballgame. It’s absolutely wonderful to see in these days and times where people are so busy.”

Marcia and Dave are the parents of Brandy Haney, Amy Raines and Dave Westfall and have welcomed each of their children’s spouses into the family along with a handful of grandchildren.

According to her nomination letter, McCoy said that both Marcia and Dave came from great families and have passed on their values to their children and grandchildren.

One of the neat things about this family, McCoy said, is that they all live relatively close to each other. While Dave and Marcia live on Koons Run Road, their two daughters live just a few miles away and their son lives on East Side.

“They’re all right there close together, and they’re always helping each other out,” McCoy said.

This time of year is always a special one for families, and one thing the Westfalls enjoy doing is sending Christmas cards to their friends and loved ones.

As much as they enjoy sending them, friends like McCoy enjoy getting them.

“It’s always a family picture with all of them in it,” McCoy said. “I always enjoy getting their Christmas cards because I always want to see how the kids have grown each year.”

For McCoy, being able to nominate her good friends was truly a blessing.

“I’ve known them and watched their kids grow up and have grandkids,” said McCoy, who has known Marcia and Dave since the 1970s. “I just think they’re very deserving of this award.”

And the second article on the Westfalls:

TWV’s Family of the Year the Westfalls celebrate life together

By Matt Welch Times West Virginian

FAIRMONT — For Dave and Marcia Westfall, family is everything. Then again, how could it not be when you have three kids and eight grandchildren to share everything with?

For the Westfalls, who have been selected as the Times West Virginian Family of the Year for 2015, family is built on love and respect and everything else follows suit.

“I know that my parents respect each other. They were always good to each other,” Marcia said. “It’s the same way with Dave — his mom and dad are both still here, and his dad really takes care of his mom. That’s important.

“And,” Marcia continued, “if you don’t have love, it’s hard to have respect.”

The Westfalls have enjoyed a wonderful life of raising children, attending many sporting events and taking family trips, including a cross-country trek that Dave and Marcia endured on their motorcycle.

Without their family, those things may have never happened. “We always do everything together. We celebrate everything,” Marcia said.

For as long as they can remember, sports has helped the family form a bond.

“When the kids come around, there’s a lot of basketball. We have a basketball court in the yard,” Marcia said. “That’s special.”

Between their children and grandchildren, attending sporting events has gone from just something to do to almost a good time for a family reunion for the Westfalls.

“My grandkids are getting older, so we go to a lot of their events,” Marcia said. “We spend a lot of time at Husky Field and the Monongah gym. One time, there was like 15 of us at a game. That almost filled a whole bleacher.

“There’s a lot of cheering for the grandkids,” she said. “It’s something special to do since we’re older. It’s fun.”

When they’re not watching their grandkids participate in sports, the Westfalls enjoy having picnics and their annual trip to Florida.

But no matter what’s going on, the family is usually together.

“There’s always somebody that you can count on when you have family,” Marcia said. “You know that you’re going to be loved. You know that when you’re in trouble, someone can comfort you.”

But even more than being an emotionally close family, the Westfalls are even physically close — their two daughters live just down the street and their son lives nearby on East Side.

Dave even helped build their two daughters’ houses, Marcia said.

Being a close-knit family, though, has been a longstanding tradition in the Westfall family.

“My mom and dad were married for a long time and so have Dave’s,” Marcia said. “For us, that’s almost like a family tradition: staying together. It gives us some pride.”

As the winter holiday season comes to a close, the Westfalls have celebrated another year together.

As a kid, Christmas time is always special.

But as a grandparent?

Even more so.

“It’s always nice to see them get something they weren’t expecting,” said Marcia, who added that they always make the trek to visit the kids for the holidays. “They’re always grateful and they appreciate everything.”

It’s no secret that grandparents are said to be the ones who are able to spoil the grandkids without repercussion.

Marcia laughed at that statement and put it this way: “When you’re raising your children, you’re very busy. It’s kind of hard to realize what you’re doing and what you’re building. But when you have grandchildren, it’s like, ah, now I see.

“That’s why you can have a little more fun with the grandkids,” she continued. “You can sit back and enjoy it a little more, because you don’t have as much responsibility.”

For the Westfalls, Dave and Marcia hope to continue to watch both their children and grandchildren grow day by day.

On 1/5/16, Jackie told me that Pam was doing better after having the clamps or stitches or whatever (I forgot what Jackie told me) removed.

Pam Mason Shanholtz has kidney removed

My sister, Jackie Olesky Straight, Class of 1955, who lives in Rivesville, provided this health report on Pam Mason Stanholtz, Class of 1970:

Pam Mason Shanholtz (MHS), sister of Patty Mason Wells (1955), recently had surgery to have one kidney removed.  While she is home now, she's in much pain.  The biopsy hasn't return as yet so she doesn't know what lies ahead.  We are asking for prayers for her recovery.  Her address is: 6 Kessla Way, Shinnston, WV 26431.  I'm sure thinking of you cards from her friends/classmates would be appreciated.  Pam is a Medical Technologist at United Hospital Center with my daughter, Belinda Straight Morris.

Pam’s mother is Nedra Lucille Holbert Mason celebrated her 100th birthday in Monongah Baptist Church A YEAR AGO!

Pam and Patricia Sue Mason Wells, Class of 1955, live with Lucille in Shinnston. They drive mama from Shinnston to Monongah every Sunday so that Lucille can attend Monongah Baptist Church. She’s been a member for nearly half of the church’s 200+ years of existence.

When I ran the story in 2014 about Lucille’s 100th birthday and sent the information to my long-time friend, John Veasey, editor of the Fairmont Times (during my 43-year newspaper editor career, I tried unsuccessfully to hire John on the Dayton Daily News), Pam and Patty wrote a thank-you email to me that concluded:

“It is our privilege to care for our mom as she cared for us throughout our lives.  She continues to be our inspiration as she daily shows us about growing old with grace.”

Again, if you want to send get-well and/or best wishes to Pam, the address is:

Good luck, Pam.
McDougal and Satterfield families should be proud

Monongah Town Recorder Patty Steele McCombs posted this:

“Take a minute to read this very touching story written by Haleigh McDougal, daughter of John McDougal, granddaughter of Mickey Satterfield. Very moving story!!”

John, a 1990 North Marion High grad, is a brother of Earl McDougal, Class of 1963, who is married to Mareia Wilmouth McDougal, Class of 1964.

Mareia’s sister, Sherry Wilmouth Vance, and her husband also are Monongah High graduates. So are Earl’s siblings, Edna McDougal Saunders, Class of 1948; Helen McDougal Mudry, Class of 1965; James McDougal, Class of 1961; and Reva McDougal Ash, Class of 1950.

Cami McDougal Handlan added:

John, her dad, is the son of Earl McDougal. John is a graduate of North Marion and a WV State Trooper.  Earl's brother John passed away years ago. He was older than Earl, but not sure when he graduated.

Mickey Satterfield was a Salai and McDougal prior to marrying Mike Satterfield from East Side. Mickey is younger than Earl, but did graduate from Monongah also.

Angie Criado McDougal is Haleigh's mom. She also graduated from North Marion.

I hope this helps.

Thanks for posting Haleigh's story!!! She deserves every bit of recognition she gets!!

We all are so proud of her and her brother, Nicholas! They both are talented, great teens!

Tom Dean, Class of 1949, whose mailing address is

Tom Dean
434 Peninsula Pointe
Lynch Station, VA 24571

Has been on the road again visiting family, and will visit other family members over New Year’s.

Tom’s email:

“Have been out of town for the last nine days. Visiting my son & his family in NC. Will be going to Arlington over New Year’s. Hope you have a
prosperous New Year!

“Tom”

Tom has three sons in Goldsboro, North Carolina. Tom’s daughter, retired Colonel Pam Dean Mitchell, lives in Arlington, Virginia, which is almost 200 miles from Tom’s home in Lynch Station.

Tom always stops to visit Ramona Fullen Michalski, Class of 1949, when he’s in Monongah. He and Monie, as he calls her, have been friends for 65 years. Just like Bob Kasper, Class of 1950, who has homes in South Lyon and Presque Isle (Grand Lake), Michigan, has been friends with me for 78 years, since we were in first grade at Sts. Peter and Paul School together.

As most of you know, I visit Bob at his Grand Lake summer home for golf and conversation every summer and he visits Paula and I at our Tallmadge, Ohio home and goes with me to a WVU game in Mountaineer Field every fall. He's already down for the Oct. 22 TCU game. We may be 83, but we plan ahead anyway.

Tom also visits Elaine Hewitt Monell, Class of 1949, in  Riverside, a Dayton, Ohio suburb, the widow of Raymond “Soak” Monell, Class of 1945. Tom visited them when Soak still was alive, too.

In 2011 Tom had a reunion with Ted Nagle, Class of 1952, and Ted’s wife Faye in Bedford, Virginia. Ted lives in Vinton, Virginia and Micco, Florida. Tom was a classmate of Ted’s sister, Jean Nagel Viglianco (Class of 1949) of Fairmont and Ted was a classmate of Tom's late brother, Chub Dean.

Tom rode the Mangino truck with the Monongah High football team with me (I was only a team manager). He recalls when his Monongah High class rode in Phil Mangino’s truck, standing up all the way, for the Junior Sneak Day outing at Cooper’s Rock in 1948.

Tom’s wife, Rosemarie Dean, passed away in 2012.

Tom’s Air Force career took him to such places as Madrid, Spain, Iceland, Seville, Spain, and Germany.

If you want to email Tom, his email address is tom.dean@mac.com
If YOU are traveling, Monongah High alumni would like to hear about YOU, too. Just email John Olesky at jo4wvu@neo.rr.com with the details and jpeg photos of you and your family and friends at your travel locations.
Sharing our lives is what this Monongah High Alumni blog is all about. YOU are interested in reading about Tom's travels. Everyone else is interested in reading about your travels.
That's one way that Monongah High alumni bond.

After the original article was updated for later information, Dennis Basnett got even more information on this 1962 photo from Don Pitman.

I think we’ve got this sucker pretty well nailed down. If you know better, for sure, email John Olesky at jo4wvu@neo.rr.com and I’ll revise it for a 4th time.

Dennis’ latest email:

Got some help today from another member of the class of ’62, Don Pitman <donpitman@doesitmatter.com>; fixed some of my errors and finished naming everyone (I hope).  Don also reminded me that he wasn’t in school that day; something about a test in Pittsburgh - so he isn’t in the photo!  I’m fairly sure there are more of this class that are deceased (and one that isn’t after all); maybe some others reading this will fill in that info in time.

Keep your powder dry!

Probably haven’t seen this picture in 50 years! Thanks for all you do for all of us old ‘Lions’.

Here is the original, revised article. Well done, Lions!

God bless Google.

I first published this photo on June 30 in this Monongah High Alumni blog.

Bonita Lavencheck Waybright, Class of 1968, was able to identify seven in the photo even though they were six years older than her.

Dennis Basnett, Class of 1962, was doing a Google search for former classmates when he stumbled across this photo on this blog.

So he identified 50 of the 60 seniors in the 1962 photo!!!

Still later, Janet Sowers Rinehart, Class of 1964, identified five more in the photo. That's a total of 55 identified out of the 61 in the Class of 1962.

Ironically, another Basnett, Barbara Basnett Cain, who started with the Class of 1956 before she left Monongah High and Worthington during her sophomore year and moved from Ohio back to Monongah in 1970, asked me to help her re-connect with former classmates in July 2014. Her father was Paul Basnett of Worthington.

I think Dennis Basnett’s father is the late Roy Basnett. Laura Basnett Shreve is Dennis’ daughter. Reed Patrick Basnett is his grandson.

I don’t know if Barbara Basnett Cain and Dennis are related, but I’ll ask Dennis. Meanwhile, Dennis, thanks a whole bunch for solving a mystery that’s been simmering for almost six months.

That’s one thing about Monongah High alumni. They help each other out, and they love to stay connected to each other’s lives long after they leave the MHS halls.
