KITTY MORRISON FALLS, GETS BRUISES

 

Kitty Morrison, Class of 1968, fell and banged her arm and knees.

Kitty reporter:

“At least didn’t open up and bleed when I hit arm. Knees are bruised. Left feels swollen. Have ice on. Going to buy a huge roll of bubble wrap.”

Kitty dealt with elbow, wrist, thumb and hand pain in June of this year. And gastro problems in January.

In December 2021 she had a cat scan to try to figure out why she was having pain in her right side. In 2017 she was dealing with a kinked esophagus.

Kitty has a lot more fun galivanting around Aruba, which is only 21 miles long and 6 miles wide. I’ve been there. Paula and I traversed the entire shoreline in one day. Nice sand and warm place, though, unlike Ohio in the winter.

As I know, at the age of 90, aging brings on problems. But then I see Monongah High alumni and friends passing away and I know that my aches are minor compared to what their families are going through over the dearly departed.

LINDA AND SANFORD CARR NEPHEW, 47, HOSPITALIZED

 

Linda and Sanford Carr’s nephew hospitalized

Linda Knobel-Carr’s nephew, Jimmy “Sam” Mays, only 47 years old, is hospitalized with liver and spine cancer.

Jimmy’s parents are the late Sanford Carr’s sister, Debbie Sanford Mays, who is married to Jim May since 1973 and lives in Fairmont.

Debbie posted: “I would like to thank everyone for praying for my son.”

JOE MARTIN IN NURSING HOME AFTER STROKE

 

Joe Martin, Class of 1957, is in a Florida nursing home after he had another stroke. He rehabbed in 2019 at the Palms of Pasadena Hospital in St. Petersburg after an earlier stroke. In 2014 he was treated for a stroke and lung surgery.

His Canadian friend and long-time companion, Arlene Kitchen, Class of 1959, posted the news. They dated at Monongah High.

Arlene lives in Pinellas Park near St. Petersburg, where I once worked in the St. Petersburg Times sports department. Arlene and Joe lived on Treasure Island, also in the St. Petersburg area, before switching to Pinellas Park.

She’s from Walton, Nova Scotia.

Both Arlene and Joe are artists and have done some amazing artwork. Joe also is a long-time professional photographer.

They were regulars at reunions of Monongah High alumni in Florida, often at the Saratoga home of Bill Meredith, Class of 1957, and wife Roleta, a Clarksburg Washington Irving High grad who helps WI alumni keep track of each other, as I do with Monongah High alumni.

Paula and I had several reunions at Bill and wife Roleta’s home and elsewhere with Joe and Arlene. And several visits to my favorite Greek Festival, at St. Barbara's Church in Sarasota.

Others at the Lions gatherings included Bob Arnett, Class of 1957, & Barb Enoch Arnett, Class of 1960; Lloyd Schell, Class of 1957; Sandy Weils Shaffer Cook, Class of 1959, and husband Bob; Lyla Cosner Howell, Class of 1958, and husband Len, who also had reunions with me and my sister, Jackie Olesky Straight, Class of 1955, when all 4 of us had seats in the same section at Mountaineer Field.

BERNIE FULLEN RECOVERING AFTER HEART SURGERY

 

Good news from Donna McGinnis Suppa-Fullen, Class of 1963,  about her husband, Bernie Fullen, Class of 1963.

His recovery from the 5-hour surgery went so well that his doctors "even told him that he could resume driving," Donna said, but "I don't think I want to ride with him yet if he is driving."

Donna added:

Bernie "is able to get up and walk without getting dizzy with the help of a walker and walking stick." I guess that's a fancy cane.

 

“His heart surgeon released him. It has been a long road but things are better. We want to thank ALL OF YOUR for your prayers.”

 

Jack Lee Suppa, Bernie Fullen and Donna McGinnis were all in the Class of 1963.

 

Jack and Bernie, who lived in Carolina, were best friends.

 

Jack and Donna married in 1965. Bernie and Chloe Anne of Webster Springs were married in 1973.

 

Jack Lee passed away in June 2011. Chloe Anne passed away in June 2015. Both had been married 46 years.

 

In February, Donna moved from Worthington, 6 miles away, to Shinnston. In June Bernie moved from Massillon, Ohio, 190 miles away, to Shinnston.

 

In 2016 Bernie married his best friend Jack’s widow, Donna.

 

Bernie once provided this information:

 

“Donna and I were classmates, graduated in 1963, also Jack Suppa (Donna's late husband) graduated with us. Jack and I were best friends in high school.

 

“I met my wife (Chloe Anne) in Canton, Ohio in 1970. We were married in October 1973. Chloe passed away in June 2015. Jack (Donna's husband) passed away in June 2011. They had been married for 46 years. Chloe and I had been married for 46 years also.

 

“After Chloe passed away, Donna and I started talking on FB. She has been a big help to me, helping me get thru my tough times. I started coming to WV to see her summer of last year, and we fell in love. We felt like we should not waste time being away from each other, so we decided to get married.”

 

West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources retiree Donna spent her childhood in Worthington, went to Monongah High and Fairmont State and raised her children in Worthington. Bernie also is a Fairmont State grad.

Donna has been a beach bunny with Linda McGinnis Sandy and Donna Davis Osbourn, both Class of 1965, and Janet Sowers Rinehart, Class of 1964.

There have been a lot of Fullens roaming the halls of Monongah High. From 1945 through 1968, 1955 was the only year without a Fullen in Lions Country.

TONY EATES RECOVERING FROM SURGERY AT HOME

 

Tony Eates, Class of 1950, is recovering at his Fairmont home from bladder surgery.

 

Tony was in the faceitiously named Gang That Terrorized Marion County of my childhood that included Donald “Jake” Halpenny, also Class of 1950 and living in Fairmont; Bob “Satch” Kasper, also Class of 1950 and living in South Lyon, Michigan and on a 400-acre farm owned by his son, Steve, and other family members (each has a farm and all the farms border other farms by only family members); the late Lawrence “Sonny” Godby, who served two tours of duty in Vietnam as a Marine air pilot; the late Joe Manzo, who served in Korea; Steven “Bucky” Satterfield, a retired West Virginia Highway Patrol officer who lives in the Charleston area; Duane Harbert, who lives in New Jersey and had to spend his childhood with the burden of being the son of a school principal (Frank Harbert, at Thoburn); the late Jim “Judge” Starcher, Class of 1950; and Ronnie “Cooley” Delovich.

The Eates family included Larry Dan Eates, Class of 1970, known as Daniel Eates during his Monongah High days whose father was Dominick Eates (passed in 2000), Class of 1946, and whose mother was Mary Larry Eates from Carolina (passed in 1993); Dominick’s siblings Nick, Class of 1935, Mike, Class of 1948, Mary, who  passed away in 1997, Angie, Joe -- Class of 1945, whose widow is Ann DeMary Eates, also Class of 1945, who lives on Bridge Street in Monongah;  they are the godparents of my son, John Larry Olesky -- and, of course, Tony; and Mary Larry’s siblings Connie, Rose, Joe, Tony, Benny and Sammy.

 

Tony Eates is married to Lucy Cann Eates. Their children are Michelle and another

Anthony, who lives in Charleston and works for the West Virginia Supreme Court and is married to Jennifer, a doctor, who is from Fairmont; Monica, a WVU journalism graduate like me, living in Pittsburgh and working for PNC Bank; and Antoinette, an attorney living in Washington, D.C.

HOLMAN FAMILY DEALS WITH LIFE-THREATENING KIDNEY PROBLEMS

 

Jay Holman, Class of 1971, has 52% function remaining in his kidneys.

His son, Michael Holman, and brother, Dwight Holman, both are on the kidney transplant list.

31.4% of African-Americans are on the kidney transplant list even though they are only 16.4 of America’s population, which makes them twice as likely to have kidney problems as other groups.

Health care experts and researchers blame:

·         Uncontrolled hypertension, Cconsistently high blood pressure.

·          

·         Diabetes.

·          

·         Polycystic kidney disease, an inherited condition that causes fluid-filled cysts grow inside kidneys.

·          

·         Hypertensive nephrosclerosis, with chronic high blood pressure damaging the kidney’s tissue.

·         Glomerular diseases that attack the kidney’s ability to filter waste.

·          

·         Renovascular and other vascular diseases that affect the kidney’s blood vessels.

·         Poorer access to insurance and medical care, leading to delayed diagnosis and faster progression of kidney disease.

 

There are more than 92,000 people waiting for a kidney in the United States, and more than a third are African Americans.

In 2011, there were 5,771 living donor transplants performed --the lowest rate in 10 years -- but only 813 kidneys were implanted in African Americans.

Jay lives in North Carolina but joins Class of 1971 members for reunions regularly in West Virginia, particularly the Ahouse sisters, Kitty Morrison and Sue Schrader.

Jay’s son Michael was North Carolina’s Career and Technical Educations Teacher of the Year for 2017.  Michael came to Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools in 2011 as a teacher at East Chapel High School after four years in Granville County Schools.

 

Jay Holman and wife Margaret were married in 1974 in Fairmont and today live in White Hall after spending years in North Carolina. They have 3 sons, Michael, Jay III and Robert.

Jay’s siblings are Dwight Holman, Demetrice Holman Merriweather, Harry Nelson, Alsie “Tony” Palmer. His siblings all attended Arsenal Technical High in Indianapolis.

Jay is the only Holman who graduated from Monongah High. Jay got his master’s from WVU in 1997.

 

Jay III is a Chicago banker and Robert works for the federal government out of Clarksburg.

The health curse for European-Americans is liver disease leading to liver transplants. The problem is made worse by heavy alcohol consumption, which health experts list as 5 or more drinks daily, and hastened toward life termination by acute alcoholism.

We are all affected by our ancestors’ hand-me-down DNA and our lifestyle habits when it comes to health.

No one is immune.

SYLVIA HULDERMAN EDWARDS HEALTH REPORT

 

Sylvia Hulderman Edwards, Class of 1967, has cancer, Sandra Barton informs me.

Sylvia is the widow of Edward Edwards, also Class of 1967, who passed away in 2017. They were married 25 years.

Sylvia’s siblings are Raymond "Bugs" Hulderman, Class of 1966, who married Lorraine Snider Hulderman, Class of 1966; Thomas Hulderman, Class of 1969, who married Jane Hulderman and was a super athlete at Monongah High alongside current Alabama football coach Nick Saban; and Don Pitman, Class of 1962, who married Jane Pitman.

Their mother was Olive Jane Kniceley Hulderman of Idamay, who passed away in 2014 and out-lived both her husbands, Virgil Pitman and Raymond O. Hulderman. 

SUE AHOUSE SCHRADER COMPLETES RADIATION TREATMENT

 

Sue Ahouse Schrader, Class of 1971, rings the bell in triumphant Friday, October 8 after completing her cancer treatment.

Her long-time mate, Larry Konzelman, was there to enjoy the moment.

Don’t know how to thank everyone for all the support I received doing this journey. Family being so supportive, Larry driving me every day. So overwhelmed with all the cards, gifts, texts, calls, dinners. It has been nice with all the surprises, to get me to this day.

 

My sister driving up, just for the ringing of a bell, however it’s not just ringing a bell, it was very emotional and so happy she made it a point to be there. My friend Joannie in Colorado, who has been down this road, coaching me all the way and FaceTiming with us today. Just too many things to mention. Thank you

 

Sue’s sister is Kitty Ahouse Morrison, Class of 1968. 1983 North Marion graduate Mike Ahouse, a mailman in Worthington who lives in Monongah, is their brother. Joyce Ahouse Blake is their cousin.

The Ahouse sisters have traveled to Daytona Beach, Florida, New York City, Key West, Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, artsy Sedona, Arizona, Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, Mexico and dozens of states. Mike has visited 46 states. 

IF YOU ATTENDED MONONGAH HIGH BANQUET MAYBE YOU SHOULD BE TESTED FOR COVID?

 

Tested positive for COVID after attending MHS Banquet

I tested positive for COVID infection after attending the September 4 Monongah High Alumni Banquet.

Since I had both Pfizer vaccine shots months before attending the Banquet I have been able to recover slowly and steadily at home without hospitalization. Pfizer vaccines saved my life.

Anyone who attended the September 4 Banquet at the Knights of Columbus in Fairmont breathed in the same air that infected me. It would be prudent to test yourself to see if you are positive or negative.

Particularly if you have NOT gotten your covid vaccine shots or don’t wear a mask.

I have been staying alone in my home for months anyway to avoid contracting covid. Till the Monongah High Alumni Banquet, of course.

My Pfizer vaccine and plenty of bed rest each day has kept my body temperature and my blood pressure readings normal. My main problem has been lack of energy and loss of 7 pounds of body weight.

If anyone else tested positive for covid after attending the Monongah High Banquet then it would be prudent to make that information known. If there are enough of us maybe health officials might want to check out the situation.

 

BILL McCULLOUGH CANCER-FREE WITH CERTIFICATE TO PROVE IT!

 

Bill McCullough is certifiably cancer-free. He has the certificate to document it.

Wife Linda McCullough reports:

“Have the Best news ever to report to Everyone…. Bill had scans and saw all his doctors, He’s now Cancer FREE!!!!!! Finished his last chemo treatment today. We are beyond Happy about this. Follow up and rescan in 3 months. Now to get him feeling better and build his blood and immune system back up. Thank you all with all my heart for all the prayers you prayed for both of us for almost a year now. It’s been a rough year but we are climbing back up to the top of the mountain. God is so good.”

Linda is on Susan Sanders’ Monongah Christmas Street Lights Committee.

Her parents are Joyce Locke and the late Larry Hamilton. Her siblings are Christy Hamilton and the late Lori Lee Morris.

Linda’s sister, Lori Lee Morris, a 1994 North Marion graduate, passed away in 2019.

Christy Hamilton, a registered nurse anesthesist in Butler, Pennsylvania, is Linda’s sister.

Linda has served as treasurer and Bill as an alternate to the Monongah Christmas Street Lights Committee headed by Susan Sander, Class of 1971, the Angel of Thomas Street.

GEORGE SHEPPARD RECOVERING FROM LUNG SURGERY

George Sheppard, husband of Belinda Morgan Sheppard, Class of 1969, seems to be doing well after having lymph nodes removed from his lungs.

 

Belinda posts:

 

“He's doing really well. Therapist has had him walking 8 room lengths. Going to be here over wk end @ least

And complaining he's only getting liquids and not real food.

 Later, Belinda added that George had half of his left lung removed.

George and Belinda celebrated their 50^th wedding anniversary in 2019 on August 15 in Port Charlotte, Florida where they live  50 miles south of Sarasota off Interstate 75.

 

They have two daughters, Christy Sheppard Marecki and University of Central Florida graduate ShellyRay Banville and eight grandchildren.

Belinda retired in 1996. Her Class of 1969 included Alabama football coach Nick “Brother” Saban, quarterback of the 1968 Monongah High state champion football team, one of five gridiron titles won by the Lions.

Her parents were Bill Morgan, who attended Monongah High for one year before switching to Farmington High, and Jacqueline Joyce Wilson Morgan, 1956 Farmington High grad. The family lived on Walnut Street, where I was born in my Olesky grandparents’ house in 1932.

Belinda worked for Bruce and Amelia Shenask Zentz at the Dairy Kone that Amelia and Bruce built in Monongah for three summers (1975-1977). Amelia, at 101, still lives on Shenasky Lane. I visited her before my July 17 J&J&Lions Get-Together in the Monongah Town Hall. Amelia greeted me, as she always does, as “my boyfriend.”

Billie Lee Morgan, Jr., Class of 1974, widow of Fairmont West grad Paula Jean Burton Morgan, is Belinda’s brother. So is North Marion grad Rick Morgan, who works for Mountaineer Cabinet Company and lives in Fairmont. And the late Jimmie Lee Morgan.

The late Monongah councilman Sanford Carr is George Sheppard’s cousin. DOGGONE DOG LEASH BREAKS SUE'S FINGER

 

Sometimes the most innocuous thing can cause problems.

For Sue Ahouse Schrader, Class of 1971, it was a dog leash. Her hand got tangled and she wound up with a broken finger.

Sue will have surgery today (Friday, July 30) to put pins in her dinged digit.

Sue has dealt with worse. Like breast cancer.

Sue retired on the last day of 2014 after 32 years in her career as a coding engineer.

She is part of the Ahouse Gang – sister Kitty Morrison, Class of 1968, gallivanting on the beach in South Carolina these days, and brother Mike Ahouse, a 1985 North Marion graduate a Worthington mailman who's been at it for more than 30 years.

Sue’s mate is Larry Konzelman. They moved from New Jersey to Mount Bethel, Pennsylvania, which is about 70 miles west of New York City.

LUNG SURGERY FOR BELINDA MORGAN SHEPPARD'S HUSBAND

 

George Sheppard, husband of Belinda Morgan Sheppard, Class of 1969, will go in for lung surgery August 4.

 

“He will have between one-fourth to one-half his lung plus lymph node removed,” Belinda posted.

 

“I want to ask for prayer for my husband. I have faith that all will be fine.”

 

Actually, in George’s case it’s semper fi(ne) since he’s a former Marine.

 

George and Belinda celebrated their 50^th wedding anniversary in 2019 on August 15 in Port Charlotte, Florida where they live  50 miles south of Sarasota off Interstate 75.

B OR O BLOOD TYPE? SANDY THOMPSON BARTON NEEDS YOUR KIDNEY!

 

Sandra Lee Thompson Barton, Class of 1967, who lives in Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania, is seeking a living kidney donor.

Sandy’s first kidney transplant, from a youngster killed in an automobile crash, lasted 34 years before complications put her on dialysis again.

She contacted me, posting “I need info to put out there to as many social groups as possible. I'm in need of a kidney transplant and I am on dialysis. I suffered a mild stroke February 24, 2021 but didn’t get out of the hospital until May.”

She added: “It will give me a longer life if I get a living donor this time. Please pray for this. I truly believe anything is possible with the Lord!!”

 

When Sandy returned my call to her (724) 513-9742 phone number, she was on her dialysis machine.

Sandy and her former husband, who is from New Jersey, where Sandy moved to in 1979, had a daughter, Ann, who lives “two streets down” from Sandy’s Beaver Falls home.

Beaver Falls has two famous residents: Broadway Joe Namath, super quarterback in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, and photographer John Filo, who won a Pulitzer Prize for the photo of Mary Ann Vecchio in anguish over the body of Kent State student Jeffrey Miller, one of four murdered by the Ohio National Guard and nine wounded on May 4, 1970, an event that crystallized opposition to the Vietnam War because America was killing its children over the dispute.

Sandy ran into Namath, whose football career began at the University of Alabama, at a Beaver Falls restaurant because Joe often shows up in his hometown.

Sandy is the daughter of Sam and Carlena Thompson, whose other children are Daniel Thompson of Monongah, Jerry Thompson of Mannington, Carole Spatafore of Fairmont (who supervises the Monongah High Alumni Association scholarship fund), Sammy Joe Thompson of Virginia, Rebecca “Becky” Cole of Fairmont and Bernadette Thompson of Maryland.

Sandy keeps in touch with Donna Davis, Class of 19, Monongah High Alumni Association Treasurer who handles Reservations for the September 4 annual Monongah High Banquet at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Fairmont.

Sandy is a Bible teacher, author and speaker. She studied elementary education, psychology and Biblical studies at Northeastern Bible College (1988-1991) in East Liverpool, Ohio.

Sandy has fond memories of her days as a majorette at Monongah High. She also was in the chorus and special chorus and played “Rose” in the senior class play, “Skinned Alive.”

Sandy frequently showed up at the annual Monongah High Alumni Association Banquets – in 2005, 2012, 2014 and 2018, with the largest crowd in 7 years showed up, 210 people!

Sandy and I both are November babies but 17 years apart. Hers is November 23, the same birthday for 1982 North Marion graduate Antheai Justice Turner. Mine is November 5.

 

Carol Thompson Spatafore, Class of 1965, is the widow of John Spatafore. She has been involved in the handling of every MHS Reunion since 2008. Her children are Frank Spatafore, who lives in Monongah with wife Jonna; John Spatafore, Jr. of Koons Run; and Gina Spatafore Croteaus of Hilton Head, South Carolina.

Daniel Thompson lives in Monongah with wife Letha.

If you shouted “Thompson” at Monongah High a slew of hands were sure to be raised.

 

North Marion High graduate and former Monongah Middle School student Taylor N. Thompson was the first female firefighter at McConnell Air Force Base since 1997. Taylor is a great-granddaughter of the late Mary Jean “Mickey” Walker Aldridge, Monongah’s town clerk for 30 years.

Chris Thompson, nephew of Larry Danny Eates, works at Marion County Homeland Security & Emergency Management and lives in Worthington. He once resided in Hundred.

Danny Thompson, Class of 1975, is married to Letha, daughter of the late Betty Morris Gorbey.

Dene Saban Thompson, Alabama coach Nick Saban’s sister, is a teacher in Monongah. She is married to former Monongah High football player Leroy Thompson, Class of 1964, who played under legendary coach Jim Feltz in the early 1960s.

George Leroy Thompson attended the 2014 Monongah High Alumni reunion with Jerry Thompson, Joann Thompson and Sam Thompson. Joann and Sam also attended the 2018 MHS Alumni Reunion.

Leroy and Jerry both worked at Four States Mine #20, whose survivors hold reunions. Leroy also headed up the reunion of former Hutchinson School students that drew 63 in 2015.

Joann Davis Thompson, Class of 1962, is married to Don Thompson. Joann's sister is Marlene Davis Christopher, also Class of 1962. Joann lives in Fairmont after her WVU graduation. She retired after 43 years at Pleasant Acres Christian Haven since 1972. Joann is the widow of Don Thompson.

Violet Irene Satterfield Thompson, Class of 1942, lives in Worthington. Her brother is Steven “Bucky” Satterfield, Class of 1949, of St. Albans, part of the faceitiously named Gang That Terrorized Marion County that I ran around with as a teenager. Bucky is a retired West Virginia State Police Officer. He went from being chased by the police to being a policeman.
