Ann Marie Mascak Davis, Class of 1955, of Shinnston is among the November birthdays for Monongah High alumni.

She is the widow of Jimmie Lee Davis, who was born in Miletus, Doddridge County. Jimmie passed away in 2007. They were married for 46 years.

They have two daughters, Lee Ann van Egmond of Pittsburgh and Sabrina Jo Plachta of Plum Run in Rachel, a Mannington High grad.

Jimmie Lee played with bluegrass musicians for years. He rode motorcyles and drove cars at Eldora Raceway.

Tom Dean
Ann Marie’s parents were Veronica Mozuke Mascak and John Mascak, Jr. of Hutchinson, where Ann Marie lived when she attended Monongah High with my sister, Jackie Olesky Straight, also Class of 1955, who today is a widow living in Rivesville. Veronica worked at St. Barbara’s Nursing Home just south of Monongah and was a member of the Hutchinson Improvement Association.

Monongah High Alumni Association vice president Dolores Edwards, also in the Class of 1955 with Ann Marie, describes her as "a very nice lady. Had a conversation with her the other morning when I ran into her at breakfast."

As usual the November Monongah High alumni birthdays begins with Tom Dean, Class of 1949, who moved to Goldsboro, North Carolina, near more of his children and grandchildren after living for 11 years in Lynch Station, Virginia. Tom’s wife, Rosemarie Dean, passed away in 2012.

Tom and Rosemarie lived in Goldsboro, North Carolina for 35 years before moving to Lynch Station, near where their daughter, retired Colonel Pam Dean Mitchell, lives in Arlington, Virginia. Tom has three sons in Goldsboro and brother Jim Dean, Class of 1945, not that far away in LePlace, Louisiana. The sons work in Raleigh, Pine Level and Fayetteville.

If your name is not on this list, email John Olesky at jo4wvu@neo.rr.com  with your full name, including maiden name, your birthday date, your graduation year and your current hometown.

Norman’s obituary:

Norman Andrew Stanley, 44, of Fairmont, passed away unexpectedly at his home Saturday (Oct. 28, 2017).

He was raised in the home of his grandparents, Norman and Colleen Stanley.

He was a 1991 graduate of North Marion High School. Norman enjoyed using his computer and playing video games. He was employed for 19 years for Asplundh Tree Service and was currently employed at Talerico Security.

I have another belated passing to sadly report: Danny Minton, who started with the Class of 1958 before his parents Gertrude Holbrook Minton and Theodore Minton returned to Kentucky, passed away in 2015 in Wadsworth, Ohio, which is about 15 miles from my Tallmadge home.

Danny’s sister, Lucille Minton Pringle, Class of 1953, of Mentor, Ohio, also attended Monongah High, recalled Jim McDaniel, Class of 1960, who made the email inquiry that led to my search for what happened to Danny. Lucille is the widow of Bill Pringle, in my Class of 1950.

When I informed Jim, he replied:

John:  That is really sad news.  Danny was a great guy and we were good friends.  They must have moved before school started for his senior year.

“I was thinking that your sister (Jackie, Class of 1955) may remember Lucille, as she was older than me.  The other sister mentioned (in the obituary) I do not remember.

“You are right. When checking on people, never know what you will find.

"Thanks for checking for me.

“i just found out recently that a guy I served with in the Air force passed on in 2010. Guess we are at the age when a lot of friends are passing on.

“Jim”

It was Duane Harbert, Class of 1951, who lives in Marlton, New Jersey, who brought Bill and Lucille together.

Let Duane explain:

“Their first date was a double date with Mary (Duane’s wife) and me. I was home on leave from the Navy and I think Bill might have been on leave from the Army.

“At the time Lucille lived with her family in the house between our house and the Baptist Church in Worthington. Lucille graduated from Monongah High” before the family moved from West Virginia.

Bill was born in Fairview to Nyla Shriver Pringle and Frank Pringle, who later moved to Worthington where Bill and Lucille met, thanks to a nudge from Duane and Mary Harbert.
Bill and Lucille lived in Chardon for a long time before moving to nearby Mentor.

Lucille was a librarian at Monongah High. Bill loved restoring old cars.

Danny played football and basketball for Monongah High, including with the 1956 state runnersup grid team. And he was in the Monongah High band, always one of the best in the state.

Danny was born in Letcher County, with its county seat in Whitesburg in eastern Kentucky.
He moved around a bit, from Kentucky to Virginia to Tennessee before spending his final 25 years in Wadsworth. He also traveled, courtesy of the U.S. Navy, during the Vietnam War.

Danny and his widow, Lynn Fowler, had three children – Judy Minton Lopez of Piedras Negras, Mexico; Robert Minton of Louisville, Kentucky; and Cindy Minton White of Fishervile, Kentucky – and six grandchildren.

Danny’s obituary:

Wadsworth –
Daniel A. Minton, 76, of Wadsworth passed away unexpectedly Wednesday, March 11, 2015 at his residence.

He was born February 23, 1939 in Letcher County, KY to the late Theodore and Gertrude (Holbrook) Minton and lived in Virginia and Tennessee before settling down in Wadsworth for the past 25 years.

Dan served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War. He married Lynn Fowler on September 12, 1964; she survives. He was employed by Diebold where he established and managed the film lab for 35 years until his retirement in 2002.

Dan was a member of Northside Christian Church and enjoyed his job and being involved in the church. He was a true serveaholic and will be missed by everyone who had the privilege to know him.

Surviving in addition to his wife are children, Judy (Carlos) Lopez of Piedras Negras, Mexico, Robert (Beth) Minton of Louisville, KY and Cindy (Andy) White of Fisherville, KY; grandchildren, Cindy, Laura, Anna, Emma, Aidan and Lydia; sisters, Lucille Pringle of Mentor and Ricki (Wayne) Huron of Avon; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Services will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, March 16, 2015 at Northside Christian Church, 7615 Ridge Rd., Wadsworth, OH with Pastor Robin L. Hart officiating. Inurnment will take place at 2:30 PM on Friday, March 20, at Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery.

Friends may call Sunday, March 15 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the church and one hour prior to the service at the church.

Memorial contributions may be made to Northside Christian Church, c/o Missions Committee.

Howling success

The 2nd annual Halloween Party put on by the Monongah Christmas Light Fund Association had a nice crowd of children show up for the games, music and, of course, treats. No tricks for this group.

Susan Staron Sanders, who leads the fundraising that led to 21 Christmas street Lights to brighten Monongah’s holiday, wrote:

“Where do I begin this was an awesome Halloween Party. 60 kids was our last count. The kids were amazing in their costumes. Hats off to the parents. They were amazing and had fun, too. The Christmas Light Committee thanks you all.”

Those are Charge of the Lights Brigade members in the photo.

In Googling while doing research on a different Monongah High graduate I stumbled onto this sad news that was never reported on this blog:

Shirley Williams Ash Ebbinghaus Biggs, Class of 1954, passed away in 2011 in Warren, Ohio, where she had lived since the 1960s.

She was at the 2004 Monongah High Alumni Reunion with her Class of 1954 for the 50-year anniversary.

Shirley played the piano and organ at her First Church of God in Warren.

At Monongah High, Shirley was in county chorus, on the newspaper staff, on the yearbook staff and in the Junior Red Cross.

She married Edward Ash, Earl Ebbinghaus and, in 2005, Robert Biggs. Bob survives Shirley.

Shirley has three children – Luella, who also lives in Warren; Carl Ash, who lives in Shinnston; and Tammy Schwartz, who lives in Howland, Ohio. Shirley’s sister, Janice, lives in Enterprise.

Leona May Ash of Four States also was in the Class of 1954. Reva McDougal, Class of 1950, married a John Ash.

Shirley’s parents were Opal Parrish Williams and Vernon Williams.

Even though I’m six years late with the news I think there are former Lions who also missed her passing who would want to know.

Shirley’s obituary:

WARREN – Shirley Ash Ebbinghaus Biggs, 74, died Saturday, Oct. 15, 2011, at Trumbull Memorial Hospital.

She was born Jan. 12, 1937, in Worthington, W.Va., the daughter of Vernon and Opal (Parrish) Williams, and had lived in Trumbull County since the 1960s.

A graduate of Monongah (W.Va.) High School, Shirley retired as the secretary of the maintenance department for St. Joseph Health Center after 31 years of employment. A member of the First Church of God in Warren, where she played piano and organ, she enjoyed gardening, cooking, traveling, making jewelry, and NASCAR racing.

Surviving are her husband, Robert L. Biggs, whom she married May 7, 2005; three children, Luella (Robert) Carter of Warren, Carl (Mykala) Ash of Shinnston, W.Va. and Tammy (Curtis) Schwartz of Howland; three stepchildren, Darlene, Denise and Traci; eight grandchildren; eight step grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Janice, of Enterprise, W.Va.

Preceding her in death is her first husband, Earl Ebbinghaus, whom she married July 6, 1965, and who died April 13, 1995; a brother; a grandson; and a step-grandson.

Services are at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 19, 2011, at the McFarland & Son Funeral Home, with the Rev. Jack Ruble officiating. Interment will follow at Hillside Cemetery, West Farmington.

Friends may call today from 6 to 8 p.m. and Wednesday from 10 to 11 a.m. at the funeral home.

Material contributions may be made to the Hope Center for Cancer Care, 1745 Niles Cortland Road N.E., Warren, OH 44484.

Arrangements are entrusted to the McFarland & Son Funeral Services Co., 271 N. Park Ave., Warren, OH 44481.
