WVU’s VW exposer named #2 mind in auto industry

Motor Trend named Arvind Thiruvengadam Padmavathy, on the WVU research team that uncovered Volkswagen’s cheating on emissions testing, the No. 2 mind in the auto industry. No. 1 was Thomas Doll, the president of Subaru of America.

Daniel Carder, professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering and interim director of the Center for Alternative Fuels, Engines and Emissions at West Virginia University, was both a major player and the one usually interviewed by the media about their astounding findings that VW set up its cars’ computers so that it reduced emissions during testing, then spit the crap out 40 times the safe levels once the cars got on the road again.

The WVU team exposed Volkswagen by testing the VWs while driving them on the West Coast and then while they were in the shops, discovering the startling and criminal difference.

VW CEO Martin Winterkorn  resigned. The head of Porsche -- Matthias Mueller -- was promoted to the top job at Volkswagen.

VW set aside $7.3 billion for pay off claims tied to the cheating.

VW got away with it for seven years. Till WVU’s guys entered the picture and smoked out VW’s chicanery.

Padmavathy graduated from the University of Madras in India, then WVU, both in mechanical engineering. He joined the WVU faculty in 2012.

Violent crime down

Violent crime in Marion County is down 22% for 2014, from 85 to 66. Assaults showed the largest drop.

Pat Wilson, Marion County Prosecuting Attorney, says that drugs, which lead to violence, as the top problem in the violent crime numbers.

Susan Staron Sanders, Class of 1971, who lives on Thomas Street, is not the only one helping to bring Christmas cheer to Monongah’s streets.

Chris Martin, Monongah’s #1 photographer, has decorated the town.

Writes Monongah Mayor Greg Vandetta:

“I would like to thank Chris Martin for decorating the town. They really look nice.”

Joy Ross adds: “She is such a Beautiful person and has the Biggest Heart.”

Susan is the juggernaut behind the fundraiser to erect Christmas lights on Monongah’s streets. Valerie Vandetta Aldridge, Class of 1973; Teena Field Ailstock, 1984 North Marion grad; and Mareca Savonarola are part of Susan’s Christmas sunshine brigade.

The town of White Hall donated the lights. The fundraiser and Monongah Town Council are taking care of the $1,000 to erect the lights.

Which are a perfect complement to Chris’ decorations.

And then there is Town Recorder Patty Steele McCombs, who decorated the Town Hall Christmas tree and the mayor side of the hall. Her husband, Bill McCombs, Class of 1969, is the expert on Monongah’s water.

There’s never a shortage of volunteers when it comes to adding Christmas cheer to Monongah. That’s a major advantage of living in a small town.

Growing up in Monongah, for me, was like living in the best of Americana.
